Debuting this fall as part of the WB's Saturday morning line-up, this cartoon is a re-imagining of the Silver Age partnership between the Legion of Super Heroes and Superboy (Superman in this series). Episode 1 starts with the Legion in need of a heavy hitter to assist them in a battle against the Fatal Five. They travel back in time to find Superman only to find a conflicted and uncertain Clark Kent who is unsure of who he is and how to control his powers. After an unsual rescue at the county fair, the Legion reps head to the farm and convince Clark to return with them. (There is a wonderful moment at this point as Clark calls out to Ma Kent, "Ma, I'm going to the future. I'll be back in a few minutes." "OK, dear. Take a sweater.")
When they arrive in the future, the Legion discovers that they do not have Superman, they have Clark who doesn't even know how to fly. Clark is brought to the Superman museum and is astounded at the things that he will do (has done). He begins the journey to become the hero is will be by assisting the Legion against the Fatal Five.
This cartoon plays fast and loose with the history of the Legion. Cosmic Boy is nowhere to be seen and the overall roster is a fraction of what it could be. Brainiac 5 is an android and Bouncing Ball is back (!). That being said, it is an enjoyable show. They have nicely set up not only a show that is accessible for new fans, but is a good ride for older fans. The themes and plots are not very thick. It is at it's heart a G-rated cartoon. It does delve into issues of heroism (much like DC is doing in other parts of the universe). How does one become a hero? Does it take more than power. Watching the series and observing Clark growing into his role as Superman promises to be an interesting ride.
