This
storyline
reminds
me of
something
that was
said in
Brad
Meltzer’s
previous
Justice
League
story,
Identity
Crisis,
that the
Justice
League
is a
strike
force. I
think
this
storyline,
as much
as it
involved
a lot
of
emotional
drama
between
the Red
Tornado
and his
wife,
and the
mystery
of who
was
behind
everything,
what
this
story
does
really
well is
reminds
us why
the DCU
needs a
Justice
League,
because
when the
worst
happens,
someone
needs to
have a
plan and
the
strength
to carry
it out,
to make
sure
that the
truly
world
threatening
problems
are
contained
and
dealt
with.
Some of
these
characters
are
personal
favorites
of mine,
such as
Black
Canary,
Hawkgirl
and
Arsenal,
but
others
like
Vixen
and the
Red
Tornado
I really
didn’t
care
about
before I
read
this.
The
strength
of
Meltzer’s
writing
is that
he
showed
how
important
every
member
of the
team was
to their
success
and
Vixen
especially
has an
unbelievable
scene
in the
final
issue
that
made me
lose any
of my
perceptions
of her
as a
black
female
Buddy
Baker,
and
truly
showed
me how
great
she
could
be.
This
story
does
have a
slow
build,
as the
team-building
and the
slow
bringing
together
of the
various
story
threads
takes a
while,
but it
is
absolutely
necessary
to the
payoff
in issue
#6 and
it’s
totally
worth
the
slow
bringing
together
of the
team. It
is also
really
nice to
see how
there
are many
various
nods to
the
history
of the
Justice
League
throughout
this
storyline,
but
Meltzer
never
forces
the
connections.
If
you want
to read
a great
Justice
League
story,
told by
a great
storyteller,
and with
some
nice Ed
Benes
art,
look no
further.
