Titans Hunt

Review by Jeff Moggach

The Story was told in New Titans issues #71-84 the Writer was Marv Wolfman with: Tom Grummet, Curt Swan, Kerry Gammill, and Paris Cullins as the Art team.

The Story begins with a fatigued team returning from a mission, the next day they had arranged a party to commemorate the anniversary of the Team. Through the issues all the members of the current team, and past members were being captured by members of the Wildebeest Society. Titans who were not captured were killed, Golden Eagle (Charlie Parker) was seemingly killed, Aqualad was left beaten in a coma, and Danny Chase seemed to be destroyed. Donna Troy (then known as Troia) missed most of it due to her being on vacation. Nightwing was the only one who managed to defeat his attacker, and it was reviled that there were multiple Wildebeests!

Nightwing joined up with Troia, Deathstroke, whose contract to destroy the Titans has expired, and his Son Jericho, was one of the captured titans. The team was joined by new members Phantasm, Pantha who had no knowledge as to her origins, whether she was a human woman or a female Panther before the Wildebeest Society mutated her, along with Arella, Raven’s mother. During a conflict, it was reviled that the Captured titans were kept in stasis in rockets. Cyborg’s stasis chamber was launched, and it crash landed in Russia. Cyborg's damaged body was recovered by Red Star and brought back to Science City, Russia's state-of-the-art research center. A group of Russian scientists did their best to rebuild him, but were unable to restore his mind. The remaining Titans tracked down Cyborg, where the Russian scientists were unwilling to release Cyborg into the Titans' custody. Eventually, the Titans were allowed to take Cyborg after Red Star pleaded their case. Thus, adding them both to the ragtag team.

In the end, the story concludes with yet another traitor in the Titans family and it none other then another member connected to Deathstroke, his son Jericho. Jericho had been for some time tainted by the essence of Raven’s demon father Trigon. Jericho had taken the mantel of leadership of the Wildebeest Society, under his leadership it became involved in genetic engineering, trying to create the perfect host body for Trigon, Jericho, using several Titans to bring about the return of Trigon. The final battle left the Titans and their allies, changed forever. Raven’s body was destroyed; Phantasm is revealed to be Danny Chase, who is himself slain along with Arella as the Titans defeat the Wildebeests. The real Jericho personality resurfaced and begs his father to kill him. There was no help for him and, to spare his son any more pain, Deathstroke kills him. And finally with Cyborg left remote-controlled catatonic state, and the Titans Tower demolished

At one time the Titans Books were going head to head with the competitions X titles, but everything needs to be freshened up, and this story arch, brought new readers in to the history of the Titans family tree, and pruned several braches in the process, and introduced new branches. A great read if you are a titans fan in an era, where they grew up form being teens and attempted to grow with the times.
