Raph's Raging Bullets of the Week – November 23rd, 2006

SPECIAL THANKSGIVING EDITION

Hey there Bulleteers, it's the middle of the week, you know what that means...

TIME FOR MY WEEKLY SHAMELESSLY PROMOTED COLUMN!

I have spoken to about a dozen people about the podcast and my column and I'm hoping these people are checking out Sean and Jim's awesome work, and my own modest column.

I'm writing this right now at about 11:30 pm Wednesday night, and I'm cleaning my room, so I may finish it Thursday morning, so Happy Thanksgiving to Sean, Jim, all the Bulleteers, and the entire DC Comics family. For putting out a great podcast, for writing thoughtful things on the forum, for reading my work, and for providing the best comics out there.

SPOILERS! I WRITE THEM! YOU NO LIKE READ THEM, GO BUY BOOK. READ BOOK. COME BACK! SHAEMLESS PROMOTE ME!

That was my best Bizarro impersonation.... yeah.. not that good.

This week was another moderate DC week... I bought 4 DC titles out of 10 total and spent about 30 bucks... I feel bad. I feel like I should be buying 10 DC books a week, but a college student's budget does not a comic book fanatic make... DC was very clever in their marketing ploys... if you didn't notice, the $2.50 comic book went extinct right about the the 52 started. Well played, DC...

If my wallet were a girl, she'd have left me ages ago. If she were a mother, she'd have beaten me, kicked me out of the house and demanded I pay back money for raising me... thank God you are an inanimate object, wallet... I love you for it and you are what I am thankful for this year.

Onto my Silver Bullet picks...

The “I Can't Believe It's Not Silver Age” Bullet: Supergirl and the Legion of Superheroes #24 – The return of an interesting Silver Age Legionnaire and an interesting group of villains... where is it all leading to? Mark Waid at his usual best.

The “DUN DUN DUN” Bullet: I'm a little conflicted about this... All four books I read had crazy cliffhangers... I'm going to go with 52 Week 29. The ending with Steel was just simply amazing... but I'm beginning to think the Sensei of the What-Not is right about John Henry Irons' fate... ah yes, Sensei, teach me more. I am but a yellow belt in What-Not.

The “Bang for the Buck, Comic Book Mooch Must Buy” Bullet: Action Comics #845. Bizarro is cold. The art is a lot better in this one than in #844, it has it's own unique voice. Incredible cliffhanger ending. Donner... you are simply a genius! This is one of my highly anticipated books... I kept it at the bottom of the stack, and reading it is just SWEET RELIEF!

It occurred to me that for the first few columns, I pretty much adopted Sean and Jim's Raging Review style. I've been thinking about simply discussing the books, but then again, that assumes that you, the reader of this column, read what I read. What I wanted to do is basically what Sean and Jim are doing with Speeding Bullets, give you guys a quick take on the week's comics... so right now, I'm in flux as to what I'm going to do. I think I'm going to reserve story arc reviews for Bullet Points or an audio comment... so Donner and Johns aren't going to get a review from me until their first arc is over.

Oh hell, let's just get to the Raging Review...

R-R-R-R-R-R-RAAAAGING REVIEW!!!!!

WONDER WOMAN #3

Who is Wonder Woman? Part 3.

Writer: Allan Heinberg Artist: Terry Dodson Inker: Rachel Dodson Colorist: Alex Sinclair

Letterer: Rob Leigh. Nachie Castro is the associate editor and the ever busy Matt Idleson is the editor.

For those of you who didn't pick up Wonder Woman #2 when it came out a BAJILLION months ago... a group of Diana's old rogues have shown up, causing havoc whilst looking for her. They've captured Donna, and we find Diana in a disguise created by Bruce Wayne for her in the Department of Metahuman Affairs. When the villains finally catch up with her, a mysterious man saves her, HERCULES!

We pick up at this point. With a brief explanation of the origin of Hercules, whilst they are fighting Giganta, Doctor Psycho and Cheetah. Hercules defeats each of them, but is stopped from killing Doctor Psycho by Diana. The villains disappear, and Hercules takes shots at Diana for abandoning her post as the Gods' representatives on Earth. The entire story revolves around Diana's abandonment of the Wonder Woman persona. Hercules holds a press conference to discuss his new role, and the Dept. of Metahuman Affairs is not too pleased. Diana and her partner Nemesis (is that his name??) go to pay Hercules a visit. They are about to be ambushed by Herc, when he suddenly transforms into a minotaur. Nemesis is confused, but Diana knows exactly what's going on. Nemesis is transformed, as Diana says “It's just us girls – CIRCE!” Diana tries to fight valiantly, but when she sees that both Donna and Cassie (Today's Wonder Girl) are captured, Circe finally has her.

Circe gives us a little back story about herself and how that relates to Diana. Circe was a princess betrayed by her people and husband. She sacrificed her soul for the powers of the goddess Hecate to avenge all wrongdoings done to women. Diana appeals to Circe to join her, but Circe says that the conflict Diana is facing is with herself. Diana is pawning the duties of Wonder Woman onto Cassie and Donna, after she's run around the world fighting super villains, OMACs and whatever else she did during the FIFDE TOO. Circe mentions that thousands of women a day are raped, beaten and  murdered, while Diana is off playing human... the issue ends with Circe seeming granting Diana's wish... Diana is now HUMAN!!

I liked this issue, only because I was so frustrated as to why Diana abandoned the Wonder Woman role. The book was so late that it was changed to bi-monthly, and it's difficult to get into a book like this. I have the same problem with Justice. I'm intrigued by the possibilities, will Diana be human, will she regain her powers? Will she embrace her Wonder Woman persona? Another thing is the whole feminist angle they seem to be promoting... are we going back to the Linda Carter 1970's Wonder Woman? I have nothing against feminism, but why the sudden change in Wonder Woman's character? I guess since this is a reboot, I can understand that, but I was sorta hoping for something completely new. Besides, Diana being this superhero fighting these huge super villains doesn't take away from her femininity. I would like to see little moments though, like Diana pulling a little girl out of an abusive home, or dealing with real world issues. Hopefully it will be well executed.

This book gets a 3 out of 4 Bullets from me, just because I don't like the tardiness on the book. It hurts my enjoyment of the story a little, but I'm still looking forward to what happens in Diana's future.

Until next time, enjoy your turkey, your comics, and your Raging Bullets.
