Bulleteer Madness Week 9

Hey folks, It's Bulleteer Madness! Your favorite columnist/fiction writer/Arkham Asylum escapee with another edition of Bulleteer Madness. I have to apologize for the lateness of this column. It's really a week 10 column. I had finals last week and I also didn't get all the comics for the week. I used Comic Hole for my order, and while I do recommend them, I ordered them too late for me to review them. That's not a reflection on Comic Hole being a bad service, it's me not being aware of the delivery times. I highly recommend Comic Hole, they're prices are inexpensive and they have a decent back issue list. Now that we're done with the SHAMELESS PROMOTION, on with the rest of the show.

This is a spoiler column. I will be discussing plot points when I'm reviewing comics. My Silver Bullet selections may not be as spoiling, but I can't make any guarantees, other than the fact that you will get my uncensored opinion.

Raph's Ranty: 2006 Retrospective Part 3: July – September 2006: Superman Time!!

Superman Returns. I saw it six times. Six. Times. Once on opening night on Tuesday, twice on Wednesday, once on Thursday, and then once a week for the next two weeks. The most notable experiences were the first time I went to see it in IMAX (#5) and Wednesday night (#3). Let's start with Wednesday.

I was waiting in line at the Union Square theater (14th St. in New York City. Nice theater.) and there were these two women ahead of me. They decided to take a seat and they were talking movies. They were trying to figure out the theme of Indiana Jones and I decided to help them out. Then I decided to sit next to them, much to the chagrin of the older woman. The younger woman, her daughter, pulled out a copy of 52 and discussed it with her mother. The copy was all worn and tattered, so I was wondering who she was that she could afford to batter a comic like that. It turns out that it was Jeanine Schaeffer, currently Associate Editor at DC Comics. We talked the business. How Infinite Crisis rocked, what comics she was reading, what she enjoyed. How I thought Civil War was kind of a cheap response to Infinite Crisis (Spider-Man had just unmasked). Then the movie started. I don't think her mom liked the fact that I was giddy like a fanboy at certain points. So I sat there quiet as a mouse after a certain point (Well... I hope this experience hasn't put you off flying. Statistically speaking, it's still the safest way to travel.) Other than that, it was a cool experience, I enjoyed meeting Ms. Schaeffer, if it was for just a few minutes. Hopefully I didn't ruin the experience for her mom, but then again, Superman is my life, so I regret nothing.

The Imax was special simply because it was IMAX, and I sat next to a young mother and her little son. He would yell out at certain moments. I didn't mind, because I had seen the movie plenty of times. On the contrary, I smiled at him. I was born 7 years after Superman: The Movie came out. I never got to see it in the movie theater as a child. That's why I gave this movie such high praise... just seeing my hero on the big screen was enough for me. Yeah, the movie has its flaws, but I just love Superman so much, seeing him on the 40 foot screen was enough for me. I would've given anything to be that kid, but then I realized all the feelings I had watching the movie, I could explain them, I could articulate them, they were the SAME as the 4 year old's. So Thank You Brandon Routh, George Reeves, Dean Cain, Bryan Singer, Richard Donner and especially to Siegel, Schuster and Christopher Reeve. Without you I wouldn't be doing this. I would be such a different person, perhaps a little worse off.

Well that's my Superman rant. August and September were uneventful for me. Summer vacation, comics and hanging out with friends. I was thinking about doing my scripts more... I think I finally started again then. Tune in Next Time for my thoughts on October – December... the period of Podcasts!

I guess that wraps things up for now... I don't think this was a very impressive column. I'm sorry if you didn't like it. Leave me comments on the comments thread I put up. Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Kickass Kwanzaa to all those who celebrate the respective holidays, if you don't celebrate, well then just plain ol' Happy Holidays!
