Review by Matt Kramer
They were the world's first super team. Drawn together to stop Hitler's invasion of England and remaining together by necessity, they were the greatest heroes of Earth-2. After many years defending the world from evil, they retired instead of revealing their secret identities. Years later, inspired by a new generation of heroes, they returned to active duty. This is the Justice Society of America!
Following several team-ups between the Justice League of America and the Justice Society of America, the Justice Society were given their own book once again after a long absence. Resuming the numbering where their previous title All-Star Comics ended, the Justice Society came back with a bang! Starting with the introduction of the Earth-2 Robin and Power Girl, along with the Star-Spangled Kid being put into the Justice Society status quo, these three quickly become a part of the Justice Society's world.
This volume features mainly two issue story arcs, but each arc has other threads setting up future stories, making these stories perfect for new readers. This series does an excellent job of introducing the members of the Justice Society, as well as giving them personalities and realistic motivations. Planting the seeds for nearly all Justice Society appearances from the Bronze Age on, this book is required reading for any Justice Society fan!
As an added bonus, this volume includes DC Special #29, which revealed the origin of the Justice Society for the first time. Though this is a rather forgettable story in itself, this story is a must for Justice Society completists, revealing what brought them together in the first place and why they remained together after that.
In conclusion, with the relaunch of the Justice Society looming, this book is a must-have for any fan of this team! Providing a great history and great stories, pick up this volume containing these hard-to-find stories. You won't regret it!
