In season one, we were introduced, in season 2 we saw them end now it is time for the Justice league to rise again.  The earth was left decimated at the end of the Thanagar Earth war.  A teammate betrayed a decision made in the end the justice league was left to pick up the scraps of what once was.  Now with an army of support and a general call the Justice has expanded their ranks, they have moved into the realm of the unlimited.

This is Justice League Unlimited Season 1

“Your safe now Folks this hunk of tin and transistors couldn’t cut it against this high tech hero a hero who’s’ thousand percent committed to the fight against evil and... you have no idea who I am do you?”

-Booster Gold

Soon after:

Kid: Can I have your autograph?

BG: Sure you can … writes smiling.

Kid: I thought you were Green Lantern… crestfallen walks away.

And with that we are introduced to the hero Booster Gold a member of the newly reformed justice league.  His quest for fame has lead him to constantly ask for assignments and to the chagrin of J’onn  J’onzz who is serving as  the watchtowers desk sergeant.  After the calamity ensues J’onn begins to name of the members of a relief squad  with the likes of Star and S.T.R.I.P.E., Hawk and Dove, Dr. Light, Vigilante,  Fire, Ice Aztek, Elongated name, Vibe, and then after much coughing by booster, Booster Gold in a deep baritone voice.

As the action moves down to earth we see the justice league taking on  a magical baddy  Mordrom.. Batman and Green Lantern show up to give out team assignments with Batman  giving Booster Gold Crowd control with a very stern look. Elongated man and Booster are left behind with John saying “Plastic man is down there we don’t need two stretchy guys.”  An unusual take on Ralph Dibny complaining about how he's Batman and Plastic Man rolled into one.  Wonder Woman relives them saying “We need you” Booster steps up and I can honestly feel  his heart break as Diana says “not you, him” pointing at Ralph.

With Superman falling from the sky as a composite Wonder Woman Batman and Superman relegate him to crowd control once more.  A child asks him to go and save his Ants which Booster mistaken  as aunts only to have the child once more confuse him with Green Lantern. A Lab erupts in flames as Booster goes to help out where we are introduced to the damsel in distress Dr. Simmons.  She quickly fills Booster in on a new situation as an experiment gone wrong is let loose again. Dr. Brown has been fused with a source of energy that is consuming all that is in front of him.  A Booster radio’s in he is brushed off and Booster hoping to impress her plays it off.  How can we stop it, a simple collar; Easy Right? Right, Booster attempts to place the collar around his neck only to fail as he is hit with an oncoming truck that is eaten by the black hole.

Afterwards the screams of a woman are heard in one of the funniest moments of the show. A woman is found in an ambulance giving birth where Booster tries to pass the buck:

Booster: “Maybe you should handle this”

Dr. Simmons: Why me?

BG: You’re a Doctor?

Dr. Simmons: I’m a physicist!, give me the collar as she runs off.

After helping her give birth she screams “thank you Green Lantern”   He sees that the black hole is sucking Dr. Simmons into a train station where he gallantly saves her and himself by blowing the door to the subway. Collar in hand we see Booster act heroically for the first time as he risks his life to save Dr. Browns.; only to get hit with a train as he doesn’t pay attention.  Crestfallen Booster contemplates his heroic career. He has little time to think as Dr. Brown is nearing critically mass, he fights a giant building when Skeet’s is sucked into the black hole.  With Skeet’s lost Booster looks on as Brown is ready to burst.

In a moment where he admits his motives and true colors he calls himself a failure, when he gets a pushed in the right direction.  Pulled by the force from the black hole he puts his life at risk and as his body is pulled into the vortex manages to get the collar unto him nullifying its effects.  Booster looks on stunned as a giant burps regurgitates the eaten debris back into our world.

As the story closes Booster is left contemplating his role, even passing up a chance to kiss the girl, but he plays it off as “Kissing girls is for heroes Skeet’s…”  Batman with a grim looks scolds him and doesn’t buy the truth that Booster is saying, even planning a chat later.  Dr. Simmons then tricks him into getting his attention by calling him Green Lantern.

In All this was one of the funnier and more heartfelt episodes on this particular disc.  While the others where entertaining they focused mainly on the main group of heroes.  In this story we saw a B or some say C list hero finally get his due , and although funny at times the Green Lantern jokes can get under your skin. I feel for you BG. The guy was downplayed, admonished and generally ignored.  I would also feel like him. However I saw what they were trying to do, show you BG from a different light.  As in the Jurgens run BG was self centered and egotistical only looking for a claim to fame. Yet, at the end of this episode you saw him become something more a hero. I applaud the producers for showing such a story and look forward to many more hours of view.

I give the episode a rating of 4 out of 5 Raging Bullets. The art was simplified Bruce Timm style art that led to easy reproduction and the sound quality and voices were well cast and recorded.  I enjoy the DVDs and hope that DC would reconsider this series and put it back on only time will tell.

For now I hope you guys just keep on Ragin’
